A statement from the Commissioner for Older People for Northern Ireland in relation to the Muckamore Abbey Public Inquiry report published today:

The Commissioner for Older People for Northern Ireland, Siobhan Casey, said:

“The findings of this report are deeply distressing and highlight the serious and unacceptable failings in the care and protection of some of the most vulnerable people in our society.

“My thoughts are with all those who experienced harm, and with their families, who have shown immense courage in bringing these issues to light.  The experiences detailed in this Inquiry will make difficult reading for many people and are a stark reminder of the devastating impact when care and safeguarding systems fail.

“Many of the issues raised, are consistent with the issues identified in Home Truths, which showed the depths of the damage felt by older people in care when systems fail.

“It is essential that the lessons from this Inquiry are acted upon. There has to be a clear commitment to delivering meaningful reform that protects people and restores public confidence.

“The proposed Adult Protection Bill is a critical opportunity to strengthen protections for vulnerable adults and ensure that early intervention prevents harm before it occurs. I will be carefully considering the findings and recommendations as part of my ongoing work on the Bill.”
