Commissioner marks International Day of Older People and says social connection is a key ingredient to ageing well

Siobhan Casey, the Commissioner for Older People for Northern Ireland, marked International Day of Older People and the start of Positive Ageing Month by highlighting the vital role of social connection in positive ageing and renewing her call for government funding for the age sector.

Highlighting this year’s theme of "Building Belonging and the Power of Social Connections" The Commissioner said:  "This is a time to celebrate and champion the contributions of older people across Northern Ireland."

The Commissioner highlighted the transformative power of social networks that she has witnessed firsthand since she took up the role in April. "Over the past few months, I've had the privilege of meeting almost 500 older people across Northern Ireland.  What I've seen firsthand is the deep meaning, and well-being that social connections bring. Strong relationships with family, friends, and community truly make later life richer."

"This Positive Ageing Month is an opportunity to celebrate our older people and ensure that Northern Ireland is a place where everyone belongs and is celebrated at every age," the Commissioner added.

The Commissioner's office recently published a report ‘Advancing Age Friendly practice in Northern Ireland’ which called for more funding for age sector organisations that provide vital support and services for older people. "These networks are the backbone of social connection for many, and their work is essential in building a more inclusive and connected society for all ages," the Commissioner said.

While celebrating the positive aspects of ageing, the Commissioner also reiterated the critical need for long-term planning and investment. “Northern Ireland has a rapidly ageing population, and a failure to prepare for this demographic shift poses a significant threat to the well-being of future generations.” She concluded.
