The Commissioner has made recommendations to the Minister for Health, Social Services and Public Safety in relation to how care provision in Northern Ireland needs to be improved.
The Commissioner said:
"Approaches to my office, casework managed by my office and the findings of the Independent Review of the 'actions taken in relation to concerns raised about the care delivered at Cherry Tree House, Carrickfergus', highlight examples of significant failings in the level of care provided to older people."
"Failures in the protection and care for vulnerable older people and a lack of support for 'whistleblowers' are leading to increased fear amongst older people and their families and a lack of confidence in the system of regulated care in Northern Ireland."
The thirteen recommendations for change that the Commissioner made to the Minister for Health, Social Services and Public Safety are the result of findings based on casework that has been received by her office, wider research and an extensive range of soundings taken from stakeholders on the issue of care provision.
